Synbio, production of sustainable ingredients and materials

About Origin.bio

Origin.Bio’s technology is the basis to combine good for the planet and large-scale production. Current processes to produce valuable compounds require mineral oil or monoculture plantations- with devastating effects on our climate and biodiversity. With the help of microorganisms, we scale biology to produce the same ingredients as the traditional chemical industrial process – using less energy and producing close to zero waste. We produce sustainable ingredients and materials that will help create better products substituting chemicals in industrial and consumer applications. Cost-effectively and with a good conscience!

About the Lipids team

We are a group of researchers from India, Ecuador and Germany who all met in New York while studying at Columbia University. We are passionate about halting deforestation and biodiversity loss through innovation. You can expect to be working in English at all times and to grow in a diverse team.

Role Description and Specific Responsibilities

Origin.Bio is hiring an experienced DSP Development Engineer to drive the development of novel processes to improve the recovery of our fermentation based lipid products. As a member of the Process Development & Scale Up team, the candidate will conduct DSP process development at bench and pilot scale, transfer processes between internal and external sites, and support successful implementation of production processes at commercial scale.

An ideal candidate for this position will perform the following duties:

Conduct DSP process development at bench and pilot scale, transfer processes to commercial scale, and support initial commercial scale production
Perform downstream processing (DSP) experimentation at lab scale to support commercially-scalable process definition and development
Conduct process development and procure necessary equipment to support the sample generation

Conduct process transfer to external CMOs and ensure successful transition into initial full-scale production
Support development of techno-economic analyses, providing process definition, experimental data, and process models

Ph.D in Chemical Engineering or relevant field or Master with 3+ years of industry bioprocess experience
Demonstrated experience in developing DSP separation and purification processes for fermentation broth at laboratory and pilot scale
Demonstrated experience in scaling processes from lab to pilot or plant scale, transferring processes to/from external facilities, and performing on-site support.
Experience with a range of commercially-applicable unit operations such as cell isolation, extraction, liquid-liquid and liquid-solid separations, distillation, drying, filtration, chromatography, etc.
Hands on experience conducting development work at lab and/or pilot scale
Thorough knowledge of basic unit operations and familiarity with fermentation and biochemical processes and physical separation.
