The project
The Ward Lab at the Department of Chemistry, University of Basel, invites applications for a fully funded PhD position in the field of enzyme engineering. The position is part of the project BiONiX, recently funded by an ERC Advanced Grant. This project seeks to establish novel methods of enzymatic nitrogen fixation by repurposing natural metalloenzymes. To achieve this ambitious goal, we will combine computational work (focused on computing electric fields within enzyme active sites), in vitro and in vivo enzyme screenings, electrochemistry, and machine learning-assisted directed evolution. As part of this project, you will collaborate closely with PhD students and PostDocs in the group to express and characterize enzymes, develop analytical assays, and engineer enzymes using cutting-edge experimental and computational tools. Within the framework of BiONiX, you will also have the opportunity to pursue your own ideas and tailor your project according to your personal interests.

Your profile
– Master’s degree in (bio)chemistry, biotechnology, biophysics, or a related discipline.
– Experience with molecular cloning, protein expression, purification, and characterization, biocatalysis, as well as high-throughput screening would be beneficial.
– A proactive, independent, and structured working style, combined with the ability to work effectively in interdisciplinary teams.
– Curiosity and strong motivation to acquire new skills.
– Excellent communication skills in English.
